We’ve come a long way, baby – Women in Journalism program set for Nov. 12

In 1969, SPJ – which was then known as Sigma Delta Chi – voted to admit women to the previously all-male society. The vote took place right here in San Diego at SPJ’s national convention, and the effort to admit women was spearheaded by San Diego chapter board member Kenneth C. Reily, a Copley News editorial consultant who chaired SPJ’s national membership committee.

Women have come a long way in the past 40 years, and SPJ’s San Diego Pro Chapter will look at the challenges they have faced and the successes they have enjoyed at a special “Women in Journalism” program Thursday, Nov. 12.

Awards contest deadline extended to FRIDAY, MARCH 5

There’s still time to enter the 2010 SPJ San Diego-Area Journalism Contest – we’ve extended the deadline by one week to Friday, March 5 at 5 p.m.

The contest entries have been pouring in, and we’re excited that some new-to-the-contest media outlets have jumped into the competition this year. Get in on the action and submit your best work in print, online, TV or radio by this Friday’s deadline.

Bench/Bar/Media Lunch set for Dec. 2

Join the North County Bar Association for the next Bench/Bar/Media lunch Wednesday, Dec. 2.

The lunch program, set for 12:15 p.m., will feature a discussion of the obstacles reporters, attorneys and court personnel face in the light of court budget cuts and reduced access to courthouses.
