The Access Across America Tour comes to San Diego Wednesday, April 28, when the SPJ San Diego Pro Chapter sponsors “The Art of Access: Strategies for Getting and Using Public Records for Your Reporting.”

Save the date for the 2010 SPJ Region 11 Spring Conference, set for May 1-3 in San Francisco.
The Northern California Pro Chapter will host the conference, which will be held on the campus of the University of San Francisco. The conference will include bonus programming co-sponsored by Independent Arts & Media, a non-profit that provides resources and support for media, arts and cultural programs that lack support from commercial media outlets and traditional arts institutions, which teamed up with the SPJ Nor Cal Pro Chapter to co-sponsor Journalism Innovations Expos in 2008 and 2009.

In 1969, SPJ – which was then known as Sigma Delta Chi – voted to admit women to the previously all-male society. The vote took place right here in San Diego at SPJ’s national convention, and the effort to admit women was spearheaded by San Diego chapter board member Kenneth C. Reily, a Copley News editorial consultant who chaired SPJ’s national membership committee.

Women have come a long way in the past 40 years, and SPJ’s San Diego Pro Chapter will look at the challenges they have faced and the successes they have enjoyed at a special “Women in Journalism” program Thursday, Nov. 12.
Start the new year by honing your multimedia skills at an SPJ workshop on video storytelling set for Saturday, January 23.
The two-hour program, “Reporters’ Tools: Video Storytelling,” will teach tips for shooting compelling video, the elements of video storytelling, and even how to choose a good video camera.
