Awards contest deadline extended to FRIDAY, MARCH 5

There’s still time to enter the 2010 SPJ San Diego-Area Journalism Contest – we’ve extended the deadline by one week to Friday, March 5 at 5 p.m.

The contest entries have been pouring in, and we’re excited that some new-to-the-contest media outlets have jumped into the competition this year. Get in on the action and submit your best work in print, online, TV or radio by this Friday’s deadline.

Improve your multimedia skills at SPJ workshop Jan. 23

Start the new year by honing your multimedia skills at an SPJ workshop on video storytelling set for Saturday, January 23.

The two-hour program, “Reporters’ Tools: Video Storytelling,” will teach tips for shooting compelling video, the elements of video storytelling, and even how to choose a good video camera.

Bench/Bar/Media Lunch set for Dec. 2

Join the North County Bar Association for the next Bench/Bar/Media lunch Wednesday, Dec. 2.

The lunch program, set for 12:15 p.m., will feature a discussion of the obstacles reporters, attorneys and court personnel face in the light of court budget cuts and reduced access to courthouses. Bench/Bar/Media dinner to focus on San Diego’s changing media

The North County Bar Association’s 10th annual Bench/Bar/Media Program, set for Thursday, Oct. 15, will focus on “San Diego’s Changing Media Part Two: Where are the Reporters?”

The dinner program follows last year’s discussion of how the Internet and expansion of 24-hour radio and television news broadcasts have changed the way we get our news.  This year’s panel of journalists will focus on how shrinking budgets, depleted staff and compressed deadlines are affecting court news coverage in San Diego.  Panelists include North County Times editor Kent Davy, Clear Channel’s Phil Farrer, and others.  San Diego Superior Court Judge Harry Elias will moderate the discussion.
