Got ideas? Tell us what you want from your SPJ chapter

The chapter board is planning now for the 2009-10 year of events, so let us know your ideas.  We’re bouncing around ideas for skills workshops (multimedia training and the like), a program on San Diego’s new trend in niche media, a program on using social media, a program on boosting your freelance career, a panel on women in journalism, and a student/pro mixer, plus programs focusing on ethics, Sunshine Week, and diversity. We’re also working on a mentor/mentee program and, possibly, a job board.

Former San Diego chapter president elected Region 11 director

Former SPJ San Diego Pro Chapter president Jodi Cleesattle, who served from 2007-09, was elected to the SPJ national board representing Region 11 at the SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference in Indianapolis over the weekend.

Cleesattle, a former reporter and editor turned lawyer, will represent SPJ chapters in California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam and the Mariana Islands as Region 11 director. She currently serves on the San Diego Pro Chapter board as well as on the national Freedom of Information committee.

Four brand new media outlets? SPJ sponsors program on niche media trend Oct. 14

The journalism industry may be in trouble, but here in San Diego, at least four new media outlets started up in the last 12 months, targeting audiences in specific geographic areas and with specific interests.  Is niche media the wave of the future?

San Diego Daily Transcript editor Joe Guerin, a board member since 2007, has been elected president. Joe joined The Daily Transcript as managing editor in 2000 and was appointed editor in 2006. Before that, he served as the editor of the weekly Chula Vista Star-News and as the editor of Neighbors, a weekly supplement to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
