The 2014 SPJ San Diego-Area Journalism Competition and our new SPJ Scholarship Competition remains open, and the deadline is Monday, April 21 at 5 p.m

It will be helpful to keep the SPJ San Diego website open in a second browser while you submit your entries, so you can easily check the list of categories and find answers to your questions.The How to Enter link gives you easy, step-by-step instructions for entering the contest and scholarship competition.

The contest recognizes the best in print, broadcast and online journalism from calendar year 2013 in 130 categories for professional and student media, plus five special awards with cash prizes: the Sol Price Prize for Responsible Journalism, the First Amendment Award, the Herbert Lockwood “Woody” Award for humor writing, the Diversity Prize, and the James Julian Memorial Award for community service reporting.

SPJ members get a discounted entry rate of $10 per contest entry (compared to $30 for non-members), so be sure to join or renew your SPJ national and chapter membership. You are not eligible for the member entry fee unless you are current on both your national and chapter member dues. Have your membership number handy when you get ready to submit your entries. Students pay an entry fee of $5 per contest entry, regardless of whether they are SPJ members.

There is no charge for students to apply for the SPJ Scholarships!

Remember, all contest entries and scholarship applications must be submitted by Friday, April 18, and all payments by check must be postmarked by Friday, April 18. Those who need to submit check requests to their employers or universities must enter early enough to allow time to print your receipts/invoices, submit your check requests, and meet the contest payment deadline.
