The Press Club is entering its 40th year and kicking off a yearlong celebration with a gala party Friday, May 18, 6-9 p.m., at Civita in Mission Valley. Oh! Ridge will entertain with oldies and contemporary tunes, and the party will take over the 10,000-square-foot recreation center at Circa 37, a luxury apartment village at Civita.

Mel Shapiro is his own man.The 84-year-old citizen activist had gotten the word that SPJ wanted to honor him for his exceptional and longtime efforts on behalf of transparency in government. As this years recipient of the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists Sunshine Award we wondered if he had a preference for a location for the presentation.
