Mel Shapiro is his own man.The 84-year-old citizen activist had gotten the word that SPJ wanted to honor him for his exceptional and longtime efforts on behalf of transparency in government. As this years recipient of the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists Sunshine Award we wondered if he had a preference for a location for the presentation.

SPJ-SD Journalism Competition extended! Deadline April 6

Good news! We’re extending the deadline to enter the 2012 SPJ San Diego-Area Journalism Competition by one week to 5 p.m. Friday, April 6.

All contest entries must be submitted online (except for entries in the College Media Best Newspaper category, which must be mailed and postmarked by the contest deadline). All entries must be submitted by the deadline of March 30, and payment must be made online by credit card (preferred) or by checks mailed and postmarked by Friday, March 30.
