The San Diego Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists honored the best in local journalism Thursday, July 8 – presenting its first-ever Journalist of the Year Award to veteran news anchor Marty Levin and handing out a total of 210 awards in 126 different categories of print, broadcast, online and college media.

Southwestern students win national Mark of Excellence awards
Several Southwestern College students and the Southwestern College Sun staff won national awards in SPJ’s Mark of Excellence awards, which were announced May 4.
SPJ received more than 3,600 entries in the awards contest, which honors the best in college journalism. The Southwestern College students won national awards in the two-year college division.

SPJ National Freedom of Information Committee chair David Cuillier brought his “Access Across America Tour” to San Diego April 28, providing a dynamic and useful workshop on “The Art of Access: Strategies for Getting and Using Public Records for Your Reporting.”

The SPJ San Diego Pro Chapter is accepting nominations for a new award recognizing the “Journalist of the Year,” to be presented at the annual awards banquet July 8.
